What is a Resuscitation Mask?

A resuscitation mask, also known as a pocket mask, is a device used in first aid to provide rescue breathing to casualties in respiratory distress or cardiac arrest.

It consists of a clear plastic mask that covers the casualty's mouth and nose, creating a barrier between the responder and the casualty. The mask is equipped with a one-way valve to allow for safe delivery of rescue breaths while preventing the backflow of air or fluids.

Using a resuscitation mask enables responders to provide effective ventilation without direct mouth-to-mouth contact, reducing the risk of infection transmission.

Proper placement of the mask ensures a tight seal over the casualty's face, optimising the delivery of oxygen during CPR.

Resuscitation masks are essential components of first aid kits and are widely used by trained responders and healthcare professionals to support ventilation efforts in emergency situations.

Using a Resuscitation Mask

  • Position the Mask: Place the mask over the casualty's mouth and nose.

  • Seal the Mask: Ensure an airtight seal by pressing down on the mask.

  • Provide Breaths: Deliver rescue breaths through the valve, watching for chest rise.

  • Continue CPR: Use the mask for rescue breaths as part of the CPR cycle.

Takeaway to Remember

A resuscitation mask is a device used during CPR to provide rescue breaths to a casualty while reducing the risk of disease transmission. It includes a one-way valve to prevent backflow of air and contaminants.
