Barrier devices, such as face shields or masks with one-way valves, are used during resuscitation to protect both the rescuer and the casualty from potential infection transmission. These devices provide a physical barrier while allowing air to pass through during mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Using barrier devices is especially important when there is a risk of contact with body fluids.
They are essential components of first aid kits and should be readily available in emergencies to ensure safe and effective artificial respiration .
Place the barrier device over the casualty’s mouth and nose.
Ensure a good seal to prevent air leakage.
Perform rescue breaths through the device according to CPR guidelines.
Clean or dispose of the barrier device according to hygiene protocols after use.
